How do I get to First Presbyterian Church?
Please visit our DIRECTIONS map for details.
Where is the main church entrance?
On Sundays, come to the double red doors off the largest of the church parking lots. The sanctuary is straight ahead. During the week, the church office entrance is off on the Evans Street side of the church across from Manor Care.
Is the church buildings handicap accessible?
Yes. Please use the main entrance off the largest of the parking lots (through the double doors). All levels of the buildings are served by elevators, and there is a unisex handicap accessible bathroom on the main floor . Assisted listening devices are available for worship services – please see an usher.
What do people wear to worship?
We are a socially and economically diverse congregation, and that is reflected in the dress of those who come to worship – from “Sunday best” to casual.
What is offered for children during the worship service?
During each worship service, children are invited to come forward and join the pastors for the Time with Children. Children up to second grade then leave “worship upstairs” to go “worship downstairs” with our Young Children & Worship servants. In Young Children and Worship, children get an opportunity to experience the wonder and mystery of God through a unique storytelling format and multi-sensory materials. Childcare is provided for infants and toddlers (2 and 3 year-olds) throughout the worship service.
Children are welcome to participate in the Lord’s Supper when their parents think they are ready to do so. To help children better understand the Lord’s Supper, the pastors meet with children and parents, ordinarily when the children are at the beginning of third grade. Then on World Communion Sunday, the first Sunday of October, these children are personally welcomed to the Lord’s Table by the pastors and congregation.
When is Sunday School and are there options for adults as well as children?
Sunday School meets each Sunday from 9:15 to 10:10 from the Sunday after Labor Day in September to the second Sunday in June. There are classes for all age groups of children and youth, including nursery care for infants. There are also multiple options offered each Sunday for adults, as well. A staff person or volunteer is available each Sunday morning to welcome newcomers and to answer any questions.
What if I want the pastors to officiate at my wedding?
FPC is glad to share with two people in the joy of their covenant with God and one another in marriage. Because we are a community of faith and we want to support couples in their marriage, the pastors ordinarily officiate at weddings for members where there will be an ongoing relationship with the couple. The first step for any couple is to set up an appointment with a pastor.
What if I would like to become a member of First Presbyterian Church?
“Inquirers” classes or orientation programs led by the pastors are offered periodically at the church for those who are interested in joining the church, or in simply learning more about the ministries of First Presbyterian Church. Since the objective of these session is to help prospective new members get to know each other as well as learn about the church, all are asked to go through the sessions whether they are life-long Presbyterians or first-time members of any congregation. If you are interested, please contact one of the pastors. They are also willing to meet with anyone at the church or at your home to answer any questions you might have about the church.
